Sales Hot Topic – Direct Digital Controller (DDC) for Make-up Air Units

is excited to announce that DDC Controls have been added as an option for Direct Fired, Electric, Indirect Bent Tube (IBT) and Industrial Heaters. This functionality was added to be able to help you meet specifications and provide an advanced tie-in offering for the customer. BACnet, LonWorks, N2 and Modbus communication will be available.

Your customer will now have two options from which to choose with regard to integration to a building management system:

Option 1: Simple Tie-In Package with BMS Relays and Signal Conditioner

Building management system (BMS) relays provided for ‘Unit On/Off’ function and ‘Burner On/Off’ function. Terminal points are provided for external status monitoring of ‘Blower On’, ‘Burner On’, ‘Flame Failure’, ‘Low Temp Limit Cutout’ and optional ‘Clog Filter’. The signal conditioner for temperature control will accept a 4-20 mA or 0-10 VDC signal for modulation. The variable frequency drive (VFD) or return air damper will accept a 4-20 mA or 0-10 VDC signal for control. The factory will include all necessary safeties integral to the unit, pre-wired. Remote panel and BMS interface module not included.

Option 2: Advanced Tie-In Package with BMS Interface Module

SOFTWARE SET-UP

The DDC Controller provides a fixed set of analog and binary values for adjustment in the field. All variables are factory-set, but can be field adjusted as required. The DDC Controller also provides a set of alarms for various status notifications. Note: We will be using the MS/TP protocol with or without ARC156.

Analog Variables:
Software Control Source, Incoming Air Temperature Sensor, Heating Supply Air Setpoint, Effective Heating Setpoint, Heating Intake Air Activation Setpoint, Cooling Intake Air Setpoint, Effective Cooling Setpoint, Cooling Stage 2 Offset, Effective Discharge Air Temperature, Cooling Stage 1 Off Delay, Cooling Stage 2 On Delay, Heating Valve Output, VFD Speed Input, VFD Speed Output, Modulating Damper Input, Modulating Damper Output

Binary Variables:
BV Unit Enable (BAS), Occupancy Status, Supply Fan Command, Supply Fan Status,Airflow Proving Status, Outside Air Damper Command, Outside Air Damper Status, 1st Stage Cooling On, 1st Stage Cooling Command, 2nd Stage Cooling On, 2nd Stage Cooling Command, Heat on Command, Clogged Filter Status, Smoke Detector Status, Emergency Alarm

NOTE: Please thoroughly review the DDC Operation and Maintenance Manual attached to this email.

Options for both the basic and advanced integration are now available under Temp Control in NOLA:

  • DDC Interface Control with LONWorks Communication
  • DDC Interface Control with Modbus Communication
  • DDC Interface Control with MSTP BACnet Communication
  • DDC Interface Control with N2 Communication
  • Building Management System Tie-In Relays with Signal Conditioner
Temp Control

The DDC Controller, Part Number I/OZ583, allows for integration into a BMS (Building Management System). Attached is a PDF of the specifications for the controller. If LONWorks is chosen, an option card with Part Number LON-OC will be used in conjunction with the controller. Temperature measurement and control is provided by using a 10K thermistor for Intake Air Temperature and Discharge Air Temperature sensing; can control standard units and those with Modular Package Unit.

DDC Controller

Available under the Heater options will be a category called "DDC Options." The four options selectable include Clogged Filter Switch, Duct Mounted Smoke Detector, Modulating Damper Control and VFD Control. The Modulating Damper Control is to be used when a network controlled, variable return air system is needed. The VFD Control is selected when one would like to control one of our units mounted standard VFDs through the network (we will not offer DDC VFDs). The Freezestat standard option will be disabled as a selection because it is incorporated directly into the DDC.
