School
Schools are unique environments that have a wide range of room types within one building, such as classrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and natatoriums.
Health and Attentiveness
- Insufficient ventilation in schools can lead to CO2 and contaminant buildup, impairing the health and attentiveness of students. Code minimum ventilation is often inadequate and unable to keep CO2 and air contamination at acceptable levels. The wide range of room types makes one-size-fits-all approaches unable to meet the requirements of each unique space.
Improved Learning
- Due to highly variable occupancy rates, proper outdoor air and mechanical filtration (MERV-15+) is essential to ensure a safe space for the students and faculty. Outdoor air is linked to improved cognitive function, health, and test scores in children. Pairing 2-3 rooms of similar load profiles (like classrooms) to a single packaged system that satisfies both the ventilation and conditioning needs reduces the amount of equipment needed, as well as improves comfort and lowers noise for the occupants of each room.
Responsive Design
- CaptiveAire’s Paragon HVAC unit has modulating components designed to dehumidify and condition outdoor air, boosting ventilation to keep occupants healthy and productive while operating at peak efficiency. The needs of any space can be met with a complete product offering including supply and exhaust ductwork, exhaust fans, kitchen exhaust hoods, and in-house control systems. CASLink remote monitoring verifies system performance and building health with no additional subscription fee.

Application Notes
Application Notes
ASHRAE 62.1 requires the following ventilation rates for typical school room types:
- Cafeteria: 7.5 CFM/person + 0.18 CFM/ft²
- Classroom: 10 CFM/person + 0.12 CFM/ft²
- Gymnasium: 20 CFM/person + 0.18 CFM/ft²
- Multiuse assembly: 7.5 CFM/person + 0.06 CFM/ft²
- Science laboratory: 10 CFM/person + 0.18 CFM/ft²
Additionally, a minimum level of exhaust air is required in some room types, such as:
- Art classroom: 0.70 CFM/ft²
- Science laboratory: 1.00 CFM/ft²
- Woodwork shop/classroom: 0.50 CFM/ft²
